Project Overview
Overcoming AI hallucinations for improved UX for a mental health app

We're currently working with Spencer Thompson in creating a GPT-powered mental health app. GPT integration is critical to our logic and UX, but it became clear quickly with extensive agent testing that it was prone to AI hallucinations – a known tendency of GPT models to respond outside the bounds of reality or the provided user context. We optimized the use of GPT agents without sacrificing UX.

Creating AI agents

We focused on what GPT models are good at: textual extraction and summarization. We created agents that focused on performing specific tasks, instead of hardcoding rules into just one agent, to prevent confusion and AI hallucination.

Developing guardrails

Instead of instructing the chatbot to “act like a therapist”, we provided specific instructions around what the AI should ask or check for from the user based on user flows designed by Spencer. This ensured that the AI would not act as a therapist but rather act as a facilitator between Spencer's content and the user's intentions.

Overcoming context limits

Current GPT models have context limits that make it difficult to sustain conversations over long periods of time. To prevent this, we store relevant contextual data in a database and use helper agents to help remember things for the user.

How much should I expect to pay for a mobile project?
Our mobile projects typically range in cost from $4,000 to $15,000, which varies based on the complexity and features required. Additionally, it's important to consider recurring costs that might arise from licensing and backend hosting. These costs can be influenced by factors such as the number of users accessing the app and the amount of data being transferred.
What's the turnaround time for a mobile app?
Mobile projects are similar to webapps in turn around time. Smaller projects can be done in 1 to 2 months whereas larger projects may take up to 6 months.
What tools, languages, and stacks do you use to create mobile apps?
We use react Native Typescript for all of our mobile development projects, which allows us to create user-friendly apps that work on iOS and Android. Depending on the complexity of the project, we can introduce additional tech such as Supabase, Node Express, and Python FastAPI. Supabase is a versatile platform that helps us manage databases and handle user authentication. Node Express, on the other hand, is a server framework that enables us to build scalable and fast backend APIs. It's like the sturdy foundation upon which we construct our apps, ensuring they can handle heavy traffic and perform optimally. Python FastAPI is another technology we utilize to create robust APIs quickly. It's a powerful and efficient framework that helps us handle complex tasks, such as data processing and integration with external systems. With FastAPI, we can ensure that our apps are equipped with the necessary functionalities to meet even the most demanding requirements.
What should I expect when working together on a mobile project?
Our approach and philosophy to products, whether it's a mobile app or a website, is pretty similar. The actual steps in the process can be interchangeable IE: we can start building the back-end while creating UI wireframes simultaneously if needed. Because you'll be working directly with us, you get access to director-level strategy and execution. We guide projects and inform your strategy, while taking charge of the design, code, and copy. We listen to your ideas and “think for you”, instead of waiting for more instructions on how to make things better. We find that projects flow a lot smoother because there is no gap between ideation and execution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who am I working with?

You’ll be collaborating directly with us, Tyra and Jacoby. Together we have 10 years of combined experience owning and leading projects through end-to-end product cycles, as well as leading development, content and design teams.

Individually, we’ve grown and managed businesses and led a company through a critical ERP adoption for VC funding, so we have first-hand experience on building digital products in the broader context of running a business. You can view a little bit more about our previous involvements and projects here.

What’s your turnaround time for AI integration?

That depends entirely on your requirements. It can take anywhere from a week for simple integrations, up to 2-3 months for customized solutions like chatbots that are trained on your business knowledge. The turnaround time varies depending on: whether or not the AI model is going to be trained, what data it’s going to be trained on, and the breadth and depth of data it’s going to be trained on.

Requirements drafting is a crucial first step to our process to keep the development timeline somewhat predictable. It’ll be easier for us to provide a turnaround time if you had a list of features, functionalities, or screens you’d like the project to have.

How much should I expect to pay for AI integration?

AI integration starts at $500, on top of monthly API costs. We’ll be using your own API key which means that monthly API costs will be associated with your account.

Do I need to prepare anything to get started?

At the very least, we would prefer if you had screens/pages, features, or a user flow in mind.

If your project is in its early stages, we recommend checking out the 360 Sprint to see if that’s a better fit for you than investing upfront on developing a product.
